The Witness

Can we prove every consequential action an autonomous agent took, and the authority under which it acted?

What it does

The Witness preserves which human instruction, approval or limit governed at the relevant time, and the human decision where one occurred.

It records the conduct. Never the content. What it seals is the shape of the moment: that AI ran, in which tool, at what time, and what a human chose to do about it.

Remove one, change one, reorder one, and the seam shows.

Ask it in your own words. When someone with the right to ask does ask, the Witness folds the relevant moments into one sealed packet they can check themselves.

What it covers

A human decides, and the decision itself is sealedThe Witness also records the moment a person looked at what the AI did and chose, keep or remove.
It never reads your wordsYour documents, your client's secrets, your patient's chart, your deal terms: none of it is ever stored or sent.

In practice

Settle a claim

A regulator asks what the claims agent did last month and who was in charge. The Witness answers in plain words from the sealed record, and hands over one sealed packet the regulator checks on their own machine.

Why it matters

When someone later asks "was a human in charge?", the answer is not a policy document. It is a signed moment.

Why this and not a log file

Five properties at once. That is the difference.

  1. Independent. The Witness does not work for the AI it records.
  2. Content-free. Never your words. Showable to outsiders without betraying insiders.
  3. Sealed at the moment. Recorded when it happened, not reconstructed after the letter arrives.
  4. A human decision, sealed. Keep or remove, chosen by a person, and that choice is itself a record.
  5. Checkable by anyone. Offline, free, no account, no trust in us required.

Everywhere

Everywhere someone must answer for AI.

  1. Insurance. AI conduct, priced like a driving record.
  2. Healthcare & pharma. Every AI-touched decision in the clinic or the trial, sealed, without a word of patient data stored.
  3. Banks & lenders. When a customer asks why the machine said no, the answer is a sealed record, per decision.
  4. Government & defense. Classified work, audited from an unclassified record, because the record never held the content.
  5. Boards & deals. The oversight record directors are personally expected to have, and the AI diligence a buyer now asks for.

The questions people ask first

Does it work with AI tools we do not own?

Yes. It records at the point of use, even for closed vendor tools, and where it cannot see, it seals the gap honestly instead of pretending coverage.

Does it need the cloud?

No. The memory lives on your machines, the underlying content never leaves, and the checker works offline. That is the design, not a mode.
