EN 18286:2026, the AI Act quality management system standard

Page verified 15 August 2026 against the CEN-CENELEC announcement and an EUR-Lex search for “EN 18286”, which returned no Official Journal citation on that date. This is a standards-reference page: the standard is not a law, and today it carries no presumption of conformity.

The first European standard finished specifically for the AI Act. EN 18286:2026 specifies the quality management system that Article 17 of the AI Act requires from providers of high-risk AI systems. CEN-CENELEC describes it as the first harmonised European standard for AI Act regulatory purposes. The legal caveat is the whole story right now: it has not been cited in the Official Journal of the European Union, so no presumption of conformity attaches to it today. Our EUR-Lex check on 15 August 2026 found no citation.

  • 30 Jul 2026CEN-CENELEC announcement: EN 18286:2026 published as the first of the JTC 21 AI Act standards to be finished.
  • 13 Aug 2026EUR-Lex search for “EN 18286”: no results, so no Commission implementing decision cites it under Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 yet. Status word: published standard, citation pending.
  • LaterPresumption of conformity under Article 40 of the AI Act attaches only if and when the Commission cites the standard in the Official Journal. That has not happened.

What it is

Why it is on this list, and the limit

Anyone building an Article 17 quality management system will now be asked whether it follows EN 18286. Until the Official Journal citation lands, following it is a choice, not a shortcut: conformity must still be demonstrated directly against the AI Act. This page exists so that the difference is stated plainly, because vendors will not always state it.

The connection to a sealed evidence record is real but loose, and we say so: a quality management system is mostly structure and process, and only some of its clauses are answered by operation-time records. The tighter fits are the AI Act’s own Article 12 logging duty and Articles 9, 13, 14 and 15, and the management-system analogue ISO/IEC 42001, each of which has its own page and pack.
