What the statute requires, section by section

Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), S.C. 2000, c. 5. Division 1.1 (Breaches of Security Safeguards) and Schedule 1. Provisions addressed:

s. 10.1: Report a breach of security safeguards creating a "real risk of significant harm" to the Privacy Commissioner, and notify affected individuals.
s. 10.2: Notification to other organizations/government institutions that may reduce or mitigate harm.
s. 10.3: Keep and maintain a record of every breach of security safeguards; provide the record to the Commissioner on request. Schedule 1 Principle 4.1 (Accountability) and Principle 4.7 (Safeguards). The breach record-keeping / notification regime came into force 1 November 2018. (Bill C-27 / CPPA died on prorogation; PIPEDA remains the operative federal private-sector law.)
