What the statute requires, section by section

California AI Transparency Act, enacted by SB 942 (2024) and amended by AB 853 (2025), codified at Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code §§ 22757.1 et seq. A "covered provider" is a person that creates a generative AI system with over 1,000,000 monthly users that is publicly accessible in California. Core obligations (operative AUGUST 2, 2026, aligned to the EU AI Act):

Latent disclosure: convey provenance data within AI-generated image/video/ audio content (provider identity, the GenAI system, and time of creation), detectable by an AI-detection tool.
Manifest disclosure: a clear and conspicuous AI disclosure the user can apply to/see on AI-generated content.
AI detection tool: make available, free, a public tool that lets anyone assess whether content was created or altered by the provider's GenAI system and outputs detected provenance data.
Licensee contracts: require third-party licensees to maintain the system's latent-disclosure capability (revoke on removal). AB 853 adds duties for large online platforms and GenAI hosting platforms, operative JANUARY 1, 2027, and for capture-device manufacturers, operative JANUARY 1, 2028 (out of scope of this per-generation pack, see disclosures). Penalty: $5,000 per violation per day.
